I photographed the synchronized swimmers "Aqualillies" in Los Angeles, California in 2017. We met in the heat of the Hollywood hills and created, in collaboration, a performative, feminine and empowering project, where affinity, act and drama leaps through dark shades of blue. Like a show ground for the body, the swimming pool is a ready-made stage for these swimmers. This is what is performed; silence, vision, a breath that is held, a curve of the lower back. A shape of sisterhood, theatrical and dance-like moves and the extreme physical effort it takes. Their bodies are engrossed and strengthened - heavier and lighter at the same time. As they dive, synchronized, each centimeter is important and like a stage, they know their marks. They know prologue and epilogue; the transient feeling they achieve in water touches the audience as each viewer holds their breath, gasps for air and applause as they jump above the pool surface.
The Dancers, photographed in Denmark in 2019, is a celebration of motion, performance, tenderness, the body, femininity and the act of self.
The Dancers are: My Nilsson, Stine Roenne and Sandra Liaklev Andersen.
